Joy Hofmeister


Republican | Tulsa | State Superintendent; Businesswoman| Married

Joy Hofmeister is an Oklahoma native who was born on September 4, 1964. She attended Texas Christian University where she graduated with a Bachelor’s in Education, specializing in English and Elementary Education. She was a teacher for several years, and afterward for fifteen years she ran Kumon Math & Reading Centers as specialized places for tutoring and instruction of kids in grade school. She also was a member of the Jenks Public Schools Foundation. She served for a short period on the State Board of Education before winning election as Superintendent in 2014. She has been married to her husband, Gerald, for 31 years, and has four adult children.

Will Farrell


Republican | Tulsa | Legal Assistant| Unmarried

Will Farrell was born in New York City, and moved to Hoboken, New Jersey; Buffalo, New York; and Jacksonville, Florida before coming to Tulsa his sophomore year to attend at Cascia Hall, where he graduated in 2004. He is the second of five children. He is an Eagle Scout. He has attended the University of Tulsa and TCC, and is working to finish his degree in Political Science at OSU. He has been a volunteer at Cascia Hall as a mentor and has assisted in teaching math at local elementary schools. He is Catholic.

Linda Murphy


Republican | Edmond | Education Consultant| Married

Linda Murphy was born and raised in Cheyenne, Oklahoma, graduating there in 1970. Afterward, she attended Sayre Junior College and then Southwestern Oklahoma State, where she received her degree both in elementary and special education. She taught in Lookeba-Sickles, Hinton, and Avant Public Schools, and then went into consulting to help students who are visually impaired with help from optometrists. She has run for Superintendent twice in 1994 and 1998, losing the by less than a point in the first race. She was Gov. Frank Keating’s Education Secretary for a time, and later was a Deputy Commissioner of Labor for Workforce Education and Training under Brenda Reneau. Aside from consulting work, she has since the Keating-Reneau years worked as an activist, helping to repeal Common Core in Oklahoma, amongst other work.

Dr. John Cox


Democrat | Peggs | District Superintendent| Married

Dr. Cox is a lifelong resident of Oklahoma, graduating from Jay High School before receiving his Associate’s at NEO A&M, Bachelor’s in Mathematics Education and Master’s in Counseling at NSU, and Doctorate in Educational Administration at OSU. He taught and coached for eight years at Jay, Locust Grove, and Wyandotte before becoming Superintendent of Peggs, where he has been for 24 years. He has been involved at high levels with the Organization for Rural Elementary Schools and the Oklahoma Association of School Administrators. He previously ran for State Superintendent in 2014, losing the general election. His wife, Rhonda, with whom he lives in Peggs, ran for State Senate in 2016, losing the general election.

Dr. Larry Huff


Independent | Oklahoma City | Educator; Education Department Director | Married

Larry Huff comes from a farming family, and was born in Spiro and graduated from Keota High School. He received his Associate’s from Eastern Oklahoma State College and his Bachelor’s from NSU in Education. He later received his Master’s and Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma in Education. He is a former teacher and coach at Midwest City High School and employee of the State Department of Education, where he was the first director of gifted and talented education. He was a professor at Oklahoma City University and Southwestern Oklahoma State University, as well.  He was previously the director of the Oklahoma North Central Accreditation Association. He had previously attempted to run in 2010 as a Democrat, but withdrew after filing. He is married and has three kids and seven grandchildren.
