OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoman will join The Journal Record in GateHouse Media’s growing family of newspapers in Oklahoma.
GateHouse Media has a large footprint in Oklahoma, including The Daily Ardmoreite, Bartlesville Examiner-Express, Miami News-Record and Shawnee News-Star, as well as a number of weekly publications. The Oklahoman has a storied and long history of serving Oklahomans through its statewide coverage.
Kirk Davis, GateHouse Media chief executive officer, noted The Oklahoman’s award-winning sports coverage, in addition to strong legislative and business reporting – particularly in energy.
“The Oklahoman has served its readers with great ambition and integrity since before statehood,” Davis said. “We’re proud that GateHouse Media will be able to continue The Oklahoman‘s heritage.”
Like GateHouse, the journalists at The Oklahoman greatly value innovative reporting techniques. Davis noted The Oklahoman’s previous win as the Associated Press Media Editors’ Innovator of the Year – an award GateHouse recently captured at the 2018 News Leadership Conference in Austin, Texas.
“The company has a strong news operation that has excelled in growing its digital audience and becoming an industry leader in multimedia innovation. This talented team will fit right in,” Davis said. “We’re excited to share ideas with the staff here and learn from them as well.”
The announcement was made Thursday at The Oklahoman offices in Oklahoma City. The sale is expected to be finalized on Oct. 1.
Editor Kelly Dyer Fry said the newsroom will remain focused.
“GateHouse is a great owner and we have partnered with them for several years,” Dyer Fry said. “They allow their local markets to dictate coverage and editorial opinions independently. I am excited for the future and look forward to their leadership and support.”
